Acadia School - Room 19

Today we read story to begin our day. We are reading "Wonder". After that we did book club. We worked on our story maps. We finished up answering some questions about Alberta's history in social studies. After recess we had an assembly. The Grade 5 and 6s put on an awesome celebration of learning. Reminders: - Field trip forms are due ASAP. our field trip is on Tuesday. If you are able to volunteer, we still need a few more volunteers!

We did a sit spot today. A sit spot is when you go outside and find a comfortable spot to just draw or sketch (EY). We did book club today (SA). And we also did free-choice writing today (SA). We did math today. We did division questions (EK). This afternoon we did attendance. After we did attendance we did mindfulness and then after that we did social studies. In social studies we were learning about 17 questions from the textbook. Then we did blog.  (SA) In social studies we were learning about the fur trade!  (PM) Special Reminders: - This evening is movie night. The movie starts at 6:00pm. - In gym next week we are continuing gymnastics. If you have long hair, you will need to bring hair elastics.

In gym we started gymnastics (BP). We had book club today (AR). In social studies we learned about story robes and created stories using symbols (AR). In math we started division! (EG) Special Reminders: - Pink Shirt Day is on Wednesday. We have a Friendship dance that afternoon. - Family Movie Night is on Thursday. - Popcorn sales on Wednesday - Library Day tomorrow

Today we had our circle of courage assembly (RO). We also had another assembly. Someone from the Calgary Stampeders came to talk about online bullying. We began making story maps during book club today. Each Friday we will add more to our maps. (TB1) We had 4 amazing people share awesome things for Show and Share. We are making a classroom symbol. We continued working on this today. Family Movie Night is Spies in Disguise on February 27th at 6:00pm. Tickets are $2

Today we continued with our cookie math problem from yesterday. We found that there are lots of different ways that you can split up 36 cookies. After recess we had book club. We also read a story called "Secret of the Dance" and talked about First Nations people. We learned about the Indian Act and how it prevented First Nations people from having ceremonies, doing their dances, or having family dinners. This afternoon we did a survey with Ms. Brown. After that we read another story called "Thunder Boy Jr.". We talked about how First Nations people showed their respect for the land in lots of different ways. One of the ways they did this was through their names! We also talked about how they choose something (like a bear) to represent their clan (family). We all drew a picture of something from nature that represents our classroom and we are creating a classroom clan symbol.

We had buddies today. We did friendship art (KP). We got both our math and science test back today. These were sent home today too. Please take a look at them (CO). In math we did a word problem about cookies (DM). We had book club today (FH). We started doing our weekly jobs during book club today too. Spies in disguise picture day (SH)

In social studies we read a book called "Shi-shi-etko" (AR). We made a visual journal page called "My Memory Bag" where we drew things that were really important to us and a part of our culture and made connections to nature (RR). In math we checked over our tests. We had a chance to make some corrections (EY). During book club we now have different jobs to do. We read a bit each day and then complete one of our jobs (SA). In gym we played a new game called 4 Corners (TB1).

Tuesday February 11th Today we talked about First Nation's people in social studies. We talked about storytelling and listened to a traditional oral Cree story called "The Granddaughter who was Eaten by a big fish"  (JJ).  In gym we played Wall Ball (LM).  We had math centers today (KP). We also did a math review today. We will be having a test tomorrow on multiplication (IN). Some practice was sent home today. If you would like to study at lunch, our room will be open tomorrow.  If you would like to bring Valentine's cards/gifts tomorrow, we will celebrate towards the end of the day.  In writing we looked at samples of writing and we graded them and wrote some feedback for them.  ** T shirt order forms are due tomorrow!

Monday February 10th Today we did a school wide write. We wrote about a giraffe in a tree. Ms. MacDonald is excited to read all your stories! In math we did our multiplication centers. We will have a test on Wednesday! We did book club today. It was the first time in a while. In the afternoon we had a science test. Reminders: ** Tomorrow is the last day to return your t shirt order form.

Friday February 7th, 2020 This morning we had a circle of courage assembly. We played a Light and Shadow jeopardy game today to review our science unit. We will be having a test on Monday. Everyone took home their science duotangs filled with everything we have learned this unit along with a photo of our science wall. If you feel like studying, use these resources to help you! Anyone who wants to study before our test can use lunchtime to do so. We finished up our writing that we started on Monday today! We did our final revisions. Ms. MacDonald will mark these over the weekend and return them on Monday. We also earned our free choice today!! We set a goal of earning 100 points in our class Dojo and we did it! We had some time to do free choice at the end of the day today. Important R

Thursday February 6th, 2020 Today we did posters for science. We used computers for this (JO). We researched an optical device. Our choices were: kaleidoscope, telescope, periscope or microscope (FH). We played wall ball in gym today (NJ). We finished writing our stories today. We did peer editing today to help our friends make their work even better (RO). In math we did centers again (AP). FINGERS CROSSED! But we earned out class goal in Dojo of earning 100 points in a week. Hopefully we don't lose them tomorrow morning. If we can keep all 100 of our points by recess, we can have some free choice time after recess. Important reminders: - Texas Donuts are tomorrow at recess! ** We are doing a review of Light and Shadow tomorrow. We will be having a test on Monday! ** We will be continuing multiplication centers for Monday and Tuesday next week but will be having a math test next week also. It will be on Wednesday.

Wednesday, February 5, 2020 We were doing science and learned about scopes and different optical devices (EG). We also looked at different coloured lenses and found hidden messages (EK). We learned that white light is made up of all the colours in the rainbow. We will be finishing up our Light and Shadow unit this week! In math we continued our multiplication centers (FH). We will be having a test next week on multiplication. We continued our stories about a mouse today. (DM) Today we wrote the main event in our stories. Tomorrow we will finish our stories! Important Reminders: - T-shirt forms went home yesterday. They are due back on February 12th.

Today we continued writing about our stories about the mouse. We wrote about our characters and our setting (SA). Today in science we continued learning about refraction. We learned that refraction is when light bends! We are doing presentations this week to the school about properly putting our waste int he right bins. We practiced a bit today! In math we started doing some centers. We have some games and some other fun ways to continue practicing multiplication. We will be having a test next week. Reminders: - Order forms for our new school logo t-shirt went home today. Forms are due back by February 12th.

Today we started writing stories. They were about a picture with a mouse hovering over a mousetrap with cheese (TB1) We learned about refraction today. We saw that if you look at an arrow behind a clear cup of water you will see the arrow flip the other way. We now know that this is because the light bends! (CO) In math we did a number talk. We also continued with the traditional method for solving multiplication (BP).
